Visiting the US? Here are some of San Francisco’s best sunset viewing points

If you’re visiting the USA, there are many sight-seeing spots but the sunsets in San Francisco are a spectacular experience that adorn different skylines of the city in the warm hues of the setting sun.
From beaches to viewpoints, lounges to cruises, San Francisco offers several spots, areas, and ways to indulge in a relaxing evening of enjoying the city’s panoramic views and natural beauty.
Baker Beach
This popular beach in the Presidio offers the best ocean view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands. Make sure to frame the beautiful sunset in an outstanding backdrop by clicking a picture.
Bernal Heights Park
Head to Bernal Heights Park, adjacent to the Mission District at the southern end of the city. After a short hike to the park’s summit, you will be rewarded with a 360-degree vista and one of the most expansive sunset views. On a clear evening, you can see all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge on one side and Bayview-Hunters Point on the other, glistening in the setting sun.
Cityscape Lounge
Located on the 46th floor of the Hilton at Union Square, this bar offers an incredible 360-degree view of San Francisco’s cityscape and essentially guarantees one of the best views in the city of the California sunset, complete with the kitchen’s tapas and bartenders’ speciality drinks in hand.
Grand View Park
Grand View Park is a local favourite spot for sunset viewing in San Francisco. This secluded, romantic hilltop park in the aptly named Sunset neighbourhood offers peaceful, panoramic views to enjoy with your special someone.
Lands End & Sutro Bath Ruins
One of San Francisco’s most picturesque beaches, Lands End, tucked behind the dramatic cliffs west of Lincoln Park and accessible via a hiking trail, is another top sunset viewing spot. The trek along the bluffs is gorgeous and an experience in itself, offering sights of the crashing waves, cypress hillsides and the Golden Gate Bridge against an electric sunset backdrop. Within walking distance of Lands End are the Sutro Bath ruins, a large and impressive structure that once consisted of six saltwater pools and one freshwater pool but was destroyed by a fire. Today, the ruins’ fascinating remnants are a popular destination that captures a visionary story in the soft hues of sunset.
Ocean Beach
Just south of Lands End is Ocean Beach, a classic California beach that stretches along the west side of the city. Its dreamy seaside views make it the ideal place to relax and watch the sun dip into the Pacific alongside the views of the city in its golden-hour glory.
Sunset Dunes
Sunset Dunes, the newest addition to San Francisco’s portfolio of parks, is the largest pedestrianisation project in California’s history. The 2-mile, 50-acre park stretches from Sloat Boulevard to Lincoln Way and repurposes the former Great Highway, making it the perfect place to ride bikes, skate, rollerblade, or simply enjoy the beautiful coastline at dusk.
Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks should be firmly planted on any visitor’s and local’s sunset-chasing list. Located in the geographical centre of San Francisco, Twin Peaks towers over the city at an elevation of about 925 feet. The panorama from the top of each peak, which spans from Ocean Beach and the Golden Gate Bridge to the Mission District and Potrero Hill, will leave you breathless.
Treasure Island
An artificial island built for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, Treasure Island offers some of the most spectacular views of the Bay Bridge and the skyline. Come sunset (or sunrise, for that matter) to see camera tripods dotting the island’s edge in anticipation of capturing the perfect shot of the entire northern waterfront from bridge to bridge on display from Treasure Island’s Avenue of the Palms.
Sunset Cruise
Take advantage of Red and White Fleet’s Sunset Cruise, a romantic cruise on the bay that features live music and complimentary appetisers and drinks. It is the perfect opportunity to sail past San Francisco landmarks like Alcatraz, Angel Island, and the Golden Gate Bridge.
