Every year Indians celebrate Mother`s Day with big enthusiasm and this year was no different but there were some aspects of how people dined that stood out including one Bengaluru diner who spent Rs 1,12,459 on food on the day.
The revelation was made by Swiggy as a part of its post-event report that also highlighted how overall food delivery orders grew by 26.24 per cent compared to Mother’s Day last year.
The day of indulgence kicked off when the clock struck midnight, with a diner in Hyderabad placing the first cake order of the day at 12:04 am. This set the pace for an exciting day of celebration, and Swiggy delivered an average of 13,039 cakes every hour across India, making cakes the most ordered dessert on this special day. The national demand for cakes peaked in the evening, with close to 30,000 cakes delivered between 7 – 8 pm. Also, 636 cakes were ordered in a single minute at 7:49 pm.
While Bengaluru and Mumbai dominated the demand for cake orders, together accounting for close to 60,000 orders, the enthusiasm was equally vibrant from emerging cities. Patna and Dehradun recorded the highest number of cake orders amongst these cities, with a customer from Patna ordering 8 Baked Cheesecakes worth Rs 17,280. Another customer in Dindigul (Tamil Nadu) celebrated the occasion by ordering 15 Honey cakes in one go.
The celebration also moved to the country’s finest restaurants, with Swiggy Dineout recording a 30.1 per cent growth in bookings compared to Mother’s Day last year. This shift was characterised by a massive 71.8 per cent surge in fine-dining reservations, proving the indulgence-appetite of consumers while celebrating special occasions. Bengaluru seated the highest number of diners nationally, followed by Delhi and Hyderabad, which saw one-week growth surges of 50 per cent and 31.4 per cent respectively. The momentum extended to emerging markets as well, with Ahmedabad seating the highest number of diners, followed by Jaipur and Chandigarh.
While the diner in Bengaluru spent Rs 1,12,459 on Swiggy Dineout, which was the the single highest billing in the country on Mother’s Day, there was another customer in Varanasi who came close by spending Rs 1,06,653 in a single booking on the same option, highlighting that the spirit of celebration was not limited to metro cities.
