Edwin Masimba Moyo Calls for Global Rethink on Food, Health, and Everyday Choices

DC, USA, 25th April 2026, ZEX PR WIRE — Dr Edwin Masimba Moyo, entrepreneur, author, and founder of AgriConnectAfrica, is calling for a global shift in how people think about food, health, and personal responsibility. Drawing on insights from his newly released book, The Mathematics of Food, Moyo is advocating for greater awareness of the link between everyday food choices and long-term outcomes.

“Food is not just what we eat,” Moyo says. “It is a system shaped by decisions, behaviour, and long-term consequences.”

His book, which has been dubbed a bestseller in the USA, Canada, and the UK, promotes better nutrition from field to plate. It also highlights connections between diet and conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and autism, while calling for increased research into food- and plant-based health solutions.

“We cannot drug our way out of diseases we ate our way into,” Moyo explains. “The field is the first pharmacy, and the plate is the final prescription.”

The message comes at a time when global food systems face mounting challenges:

  • Nearly one-third of all food produced globally is wasted each year

  • Food systems contribute to over 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions

  • Poor diets are linked to millions of preventable health cases annually

  • Ultra-processed foods now make up more than half of diets in many developed countries

“These figures show that the issue is not just supply,” Moyo says. “It is how we think, how we consume, and how we value food.”

Moyo’s work spans decades of agricultural innovation, from pioneering Zimbabwe’s blueberry industry to leading export supply chains across global markets. Today, through AgriConnectAfrica, he is building a platform to connect small-scale farmers to markets, finance, and infrastructure. Yet he believes meaningful change must also happen at the individual level.

“You do not need a system to begin,” he says. “You start with awareness.”

He is encouraging people to take simple, practical steps in their daily lives:

  • Pause before meals and consider food choices

  • Reduce unnecessary waste

  • Reflect on how food affects wellbeing

  • Think about where food comes from and who produces it

“Small actions, repeated daily, can shift outcomes over time,” Moyo adds.

Beyond awareness, Moyo’s initiative also includes a broader social impact component. Proceeds from The Mathematics of Food are allocated towards causes including fighting cancer and foodborne diseases, addressing poverty and hunger, supporting faith-based outreach, and assisting homeless and children’s homes.

Call to Action

Dr Moyo encourages individuals to begin with one simple step: be more intentional about food choices starting today.

Ask yourself at your next meal:

  • Why am I choosing this food?

  • What impact does it have on my health?

  • Where does it come from?

“Change does not begin with scale,” Moyo says. “It begins with thinking.”
