Father’s Day 2026: How modern fathers can elevate their everyday style

For many young dads, dressing well often takes a backseat to school runs, office meetings, grocery errands, and weekend playdates. Comfort becomes the default, and fashion can start feeling like an unnecessary effort. Yet looking polished doesn’t require an entirely new wardrobe or hours spent planning outfits.
This Father’s Day, observed on June 21, fashion experts share practical ways for modern Indian dads to refine their everyday look with smarter fabrics, better-fitting clothes, versatile footwear, and thoughtful accessories. The goal isn’t to look overdressed, it’s to look put-together, comfortable, and confident while keeping up with the demands of fatherhood.
Start with better fabrics
One of the biggest style challenges for dads, especially during Indian summers, is finding clothes that stay comfortable and presentable throughout the day. Linen has long been a favourite warm-weather fabric, but anyone who has carried a toddler or spent time chasing children around knows how quickly it wrinkles.
According to Amritha Ram, creative director at KH House of Khaddar, a modern alternative is gaining popularity. “One of the best alternatives to linen with a similar feel is crinkle, or ripple, Khadi. It is a beautifully textured variation of traditional Indian handspun cotton Khadi,” she says.
Unlike traditional fabrics that require constant maintenance, crinkle Khadi offers a naturally relaxed texture that works in its favour. “The permanent crinkled effect gives the fabric a relaxed, airy feel while maintaining a structured, modern finish. It is naturally breathable and requires little to no ironing, making it ideal for everyday summer wear,” says Ram.
Fabric checklist for dads:1. Choose breathable fabrics that allow airflow.2. Look for textured materials that disguise wrinkles.3. Opt for fabrics requiring minimal ironing.
Prioritise comfort without sacrificing structure.
The secret to looking leaner isn’t losing weight
Many fathers find their bodies changing after parenthood. Long workdays, irregular schedules, and limited time for exercise often lead to weight gain around the midsection. The good news? Smart styling can make a noticeable difference.
“The easiest way to create a more flattering silhouette is to opt for structured fabrics,” says Ram. She explains that stretchy, clingy fabrics often highlight the stomach area, while fabrics with texture and structure are far more forgiving. “Crinkle Khadi naturally diffuses light and shadow, helping camouflage unevenness while maintaining a polished look.”
Fit matters just as much as fabric. Rather than squeezing into slim-fit shirts or hiding behind oversized clothing, Ram recommends choosing balanced cuts.
“I would suggest straight or athletic cuts and avoiding both extremes, overly slim fits that hug the body and oversized silhouettes that add unnecessary volume,” says Ram.
Quick styling tricks that instantly flatter:1. Choose straight-cut or athletic-fit shirts.2. Avoid skin-tight and excessively loose silhouettes.3. Stick to structured fabrics over clingy knits.4. Wear darker shades as base layers.5. Focus on proportion rather than size.
Master the power of the layer
One of the simplest tricks in menswear is layering—and it works especially well for dads. Ram calls it the layer. “An open, unbuttoned shirt, whether it’s a denim shirt, utility jacket, or lightweight overshirt worn over a darker T-shirt, can make a significant difference,” says Ram.
The visual effect is surprisingly powerful. “The open outer layer creates two vertical lines that frame the torso, visually narrowing the midsection and creating a leaner overall silhouette.” Best of all, it requires little effort and works across seasons.
The foolproof three-piece formula every dad should know
Most dads don’t have the luxury of spending time experimenting with outfits every morning. That’s why simplicity matters. According to Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, founders of Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna, a reliable outfit formula eliminates guesswork while still looking polished. “The simplest formula is a shirt, tailored trousers, and a lightweight structured layer such as a jacket or overshirt. Stick to neutrals such as white, beige, navy, olive, and charcoal,” says Khanna.
Why does it work? “It removes decision fatigue because everything is built around clean proportions and easy coordination. A neutral palette keeps it sharp and effortless,” says Gandhi. This formula can seamlessly transition between office meetings, family lunches, travel days, and evening outings.
Build a capsule wardrobe that works harder
The most stylish men often own fewer clothes than people expect. The key lies in choosing versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched easily.
“A capsule wardrobe should be built around reliability,” says Khanna. Instead of chasing trends, Khanna recommends investing in timeless essentials.
Every dad’s capsule wardrobe should include
A well-curated capsule wardrobe is built around versatile essentials that can be mixed and matched effortlessly, helping dads look polished without overthinking their outfits.
ShirtsA crisp white shirt that works equally well for office meetings, family celebrations, and formal occasions.
Soft neutral shirts in shades such as beige, light blue, grey, or olive that pair easily with most trousers and layers.
Casual button-down shirts that can be dressed up or down for weekends, travel, and everyday wear.
TrousersNavy trousers that offer a smart alternative to black and can transition seamlessly from work to social settings.
Beige chinos for a relaxed yet refined look that complements both casual and smart-casual outfits.
Charcoal tailored pants that serve as a versatile foundation for everything from business meetings to evening events.
LayersA lightweight jacket for added structure and effortless style during transitional weather.
A structured overshirt that can be layered over T-shirts or shirts to instantly elevate a simple outfit.
A casual blazer that brings polish to everyday dressing without feeling overly formal.
Occasion wearA well-tailored tuxedo or formal suit, a timeless investment that ensures you’re prepared for weddings, celebrations, formal dinners, and special milestones without last-minute wardrobe stress.
“These are the pieces that quietly carry you through most situations without the need for constant reinvention,” says Khanna.
Looking sharp doesn’t mean feeling restricted
Many men mistakenly assume that stylish clothes are uncomfortable. Khanna believes the problem often comes down to poor construction rather than poor fit. “The focus should be on construction rather than just size,” Gandhi explains.
Good tailoring isn’t about wearing the smallest possible size. “Shoulder alignment, armhole comfort, and natural drape matter far more than a tight fit,” he adds. When these details are correct, clothes move naturally with the body while maintaining a polished appearance.
Before buying, check:1. Shoulder seams sit correctly.2. Sleeves allow comfortable movement.3. Fabric drapes naturally.4. You can sit, bend, and lift easily.5. Clothes feel comfortable before they feel fashionable.
The right shoes can change everything
Footwear is often where dads struggle most. Formal shoes can feel stiff and exhausting during long days, while athletic sneakers may look too casual for everyday wear.
According to Charru Sharrma, Founder of House of Vitti India, modern men’s footwear is finally finding a middle ground. “For years, men have found themselves choosing between two extremes—formal shoes that often feel too stiff for long hours and gym sneakers that can appear overly casual.”
Today’s smart-casual footwear category offers a practical solution. “Leather loafers, soft moccasins, and minimal, well-crafted sneakers are becoming wardrobe essentials,” says Sharma. These styles deliver both comfort and sophistication. “They provide a refined look without compromising on flexibility, cushioning, or all-day wearability.”
A guide to pairing your footwear1. Leather loafers: A versatile choice that pairs effortlessly with tailored trousers, chinos, and smart-casual outfits, making them ideal for office wear, family dinners, and polished weekend outings.2. Soft moccasins: Offering a relaxed yet refined look, moccasins work well with linen trousers, chinos, and casual separates, making them perfect for travel, casual Fridays, and everyday errands.3. Minimal sneakers: Clean, understated sneakers can be styled with everything from jeans and joggers to tailored separates, making them a go-to option for school runs, airport looks, and casual work environments.
Accessories can be dad friendly
You don’t need statement pieces to elevate an outfit. In fact, subtle accessories often make the biggest impact.
A well-chosen watch, a pair of quality sunglasses, or understated jewellery can instantly make casual clothing look more intentional. And for parents, durability matters just as much as aesthetics.
According to Paridhi Patodia and Shrishti Agarwal, founders of Parishri Jewellery, today’s consumers are increasingly seeking accessories that fit seamlessly into everyday life. “We’re seeing growing demand for jewellery that can withstand everyday wear including being tugged at, grabbed by curious little hands, or accidentally dropped without compromising on aesthetics.”
The focus has shifted from occasion dressing to daily versatility. They share a list of parent-friendly accessories:1. Structured cuffs: Elegant yet sturdy pieces that add a refined touch without getting in the way of daily activities.2. Solid bangles: Durable and versatile accessories that can be worn alone or stacked for a more elevated look.3. Stud earrings: Comfortable, low-maintenance essentials that offer understated sophistication and are less likely to snag or get damaged.4. Shorter pendants: Practical and stylish necklaces that stay secure while complementing both casual and formal outfits.5. Classic watches: Timeless accessories that instantly make an outfit feel more polished while remaining highly functional.6. Timeless sunglasses: A wardrobe staple that combines style and practicality, adding a sophisticated finishing touch while providing everyday sun protection. These pieces are less likely to snag, get damaged, or interfere with daily activities.
“Parents today are looking for accessories that transition seamlessly from school drop-offs and playdates to work meetings and evening engagements,” says Patodia.
Buy less, choose better
One of the strongest trends shaping modern style is mindful consumption. Rather than purchasing large numbers of trendy pieces, consumers are investing in fewer, higher-quality items that last longer.
Patodia and Agarwal say today’s shoppers value longevity as much as appearance. “Premium today is no longer defined only by appearance. It is equally about longevity, functionality, and the confidence that a piece can keep up with the pace of modern life.”
For dads, that philosophy makes particular sense. A wardrobe filled with versatile, well-made essentials often delivers more value than one packed with short-lived trends.
The modern dapper dad
The modern dad doesn’t need a complete style overhaul. Small, intentional upgrades, a better fabric, a smarter fit, a versatile shoe, or a thoughtfully chosen accessory, can transform how an outfit looks and feels.
The key is finding pieces that work with your lifestyle rather than against it. Because the most successful dad wardrobe isn’t one that looks perfect in photos; it’s one that stays comfortable through school runs, office meetings, playground visits, family dinners, and everything in between.
After all, being a dapper dad isn’t about dressing up. It’s about dressing well for the life you’re already living.
