Medical experts describe a growing phenomenon often referred to as ‘digital fog’, a state of mental cloudiness marked by poor concentration, forgetfulness, slower thinking, reduced attention, and mental fatigue.
While digital fog is not a medical diagnosis, experts say its effects are increasingly visible in daily life. According to Dr Shaunak Ajinkya, consultant psychiatrist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, digital fog describes the mental cloudiness that develops after prolonged exposure to screens and continuous information consumption. “It is not something a doctor will diagnose you with, but the symptoms are very real,” he says.
People experiencing digital fog often describe difficulty concentrating, slower thinking, forgetfulness, mental fatigue, and reduced ability to stay engaged with tasks. What makes digital fog different from ordinary tiredness is its cause. Regular fatigue often improves after proper sleep and recovery. Burnout, meanwhile, is usually linked to prolonged emotional or occupational stress.
Digital fog sits somewhere in between. Ajinkya explains that it develops because the brain is constantly processing emails, messages, social media updates, videos, notifications, and information streams without adequate recovery time. The result is less about physical exhaustion and more about attention becoming fragmented.
Unlike burnout, digital fog tends to respond relatively quickly to behavioural changes. Studies and clinical observations increasingly suggest that reducing unnecessary screen exposure for even a few days can improve concentration, sleep quality, and overall mental clarity.

Experts caution against treating all screen hours equally. Dr Aniruddha More, consultant neurologist at Jupiter Hospital, Thane, says the question is often not how many hours someone spends on screens but how those hours affect daily life.
Necessary screen use generally has a clear purpose. Work, learning, communication, payments, planning, and problem-solving are examples of intentional use.
Overconsumption looks different. It often includes repeated checking behaviour, automatic scrolling, prolonged video consumption, and difficulty disconnecting even when nothing requires attention.
Dr More suggests asking a few practical questions:1. Am I using my device intentionally or automatically?2. Do I feel mentally refreshed or mentally drained afterward?3. Is screen use affecting sleep, productivity, movement, or relationships?4. Do I feel uncomfortable being offline for short periods?
If screen use begins interfering with these areas, habits may need adjustment.

1. Reduce multitaskingLimit simultaneous use of multiple screens and applications. Completing one task before moving to another support attention.
2. Use structured screen breaksFollow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something approximately 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This reduces visual fatigue and creates brief mental recovery periods.
3. Protect sleep firstAvoid screen exposure before bedtime. Poor sleep remains one of the strongest contributors to brain fog, reduced focus, and memory lapses.
A realistic 7-day digital reset for better brain health
Experts say meaningful improvements do not require disconnecting completely. More recommends a gradual approach.
Day 1Track total screen time and identify the biggest digital distractions.

Digital fog may feel normal because it has become common, that does not mean it should be ignored.
